Ursa Major Party
United under the stars
(Also available as .docx and .pdf)
Taxes:
Our party firmly believes that the richest 1% of Americans should pay their fair share and as such, we will impose heavier taxes on those making the most in our country as well as large corporations. As such large corporations shall have an immediate tax raise of approximately 20% to more evenly distribute the wealth among the American people. In addition, we will add three new tax brackets of 45%, 55% and 60% for those making above $1 million, $2 million and above $5 million dollars respectively. These taxes will be used to aid our schools, improve environmental regulations and help fund welfare programs aimed at the working class. An income and employment level line will be used to separate large corporations and small businesses as well as their respective tax rates. We also plan to increase capital gains and luxury taxes by 10% to increase revenue and make the top income earners pay their fair share for things that are not necessary in life.
Education:
Our party believes that a well funded and well staffed education system is absolutely necessary for our country to have a bright future. That is why we support tax breaks for teachers from k-12, We will also be offering increased health care benefits to teachers in inner cities ensuring that our students will have the best educators. We want to make education as affordable as possible so we intend to work towards make tuition for public colleges as well as community colleges increasingly free for everyone by lowering average costs by about $2,000 yearly. For financial aid, there will be a 5 year grace period immediately following graduation on student debt and loans to ensure financial stability; this will extend not only to undergraduate students but to graduate students as well.
Our party acknowledges the benefits of common core, but sees the faults in the program which can be corrected. We would like to implement teacher training programs for Common Core before teachers begin to use it in their classrooms. The course will take 3 years and will have a cost but we will offer scholarships for those who need the aid.
We want to make sure that our future generations know the effects of climate change and how to sustain and regenerate our planet, so there will be mandatory environmental sustainability classes from k-12 to educate our youth about the importance of environmental conservation.
We will also be working to support the arts programs, whether they be visual, performing or art history. We will provide federal mandates for both arts and environmental conservation courses.
To encourage ingenuity and healthy competition, our party proposes monetary awards to companies and business for creating new technology and jobs.
Environment:
Our party plans to set a green standard requiring all states to have the majority of their energy production to be green and clean by 2030. We will push for more countries to sign and ratify the Paris Agreement and plan to form other agreements to benefit the environment of our country and the world as a whole. We will be increasing the extent of the solar tax credit for solar panels for family homes and tax write-offs for the costs of switching to clean energy.
Supreme Court:
Our party pushes for the immediate appointment of a Supreme Court justice that will protect freedom of speech, women’s reproductive health rights, marriage equality for all, assisted suicide and voting rights.
Energy:
Our party believes in a future of clean, renewable energy. We trust in our students to look towards the future and we plan to offer merit based funding on the university level for the study and research of renewable and alternative energies.
We do not support fracking whatsoever and plan to implement a 200% tax increase any companies who participate in fracking; we acknowledge its harm on the environment and aim to eventually make it completely illegal and opt for clean energy solutions to crude oil.
We plan to offer government subsidies to companies that produce clean, sustainable, and renewable energy.
We also would like to add that we will be having a 4 year grace period before these tax increases are implemented to give companies a chance to make necessary changes and adjustments. This will be monitored through a process of submitting a request and proposal for the grace period for the energy transformation.
Health Care:
We plan to continue funding Obamacare because healthcare is the right of all American citizens and not a privilege. We will address the issue of high unaffordable premiums by increasing the amount that the rich pay by about 15% which will allow us to keep prices for lower class families at an affordable rate. Though we support Obamacare, we don’t believe the system has been perfected. We will simplify the whole system by making the exemption process easier. We also plan and to give and to extend coverage to all citizens. We will extend coverage to cover mental health issues also. We will also add in a process to allow youths under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals access to affordable healthcare for which they have been denied for so many years. We will use the Affordable Care Act as a vehicle to transition into a system in which all Americans will be able to attain free universal healthcare, adding the United States to the increasing list of first world countries with such a system. In addition, we wish to provide all veterans with free healthcare, physical and mental. We believe that we must take care of those who risk their lives to defend our country.
We will also continue and increase funding for Planned Parenthood and maintain the age for children to stay on their parents’ health care plan.
Military:
As of 2015, our country spends 54% of our discretionary budget on the military, about half a trillion dollars. We propose to reduce spending to about 30% and use this money to invest in the American people. We would like to put a freeze on various nonessential military projects, such as the F35 project and the Virginia class submarine. We will continue to support the NATO allies and offer to sell military supplies and training to our allies to increase revenue. We are willing to aid others in military endeavors, but we want to remove our troops from danger. We want to begin to distance ourselves from the middle east. We plan to withdraw all troops and reduce funding to Israel. We want to pursue peaceful diplomacy and communication instead of violence and war. Our party is dedicated to maintaining peace and cooperation. To do this, we must reduce our nuclear arms which has an estimated cost of over $500 billion over the next 20 years to maintain and set an international precedent of peace. We also believe that this includes the treatment of prisoners and plan to end all unconstitutional use of torture.
Weapons:
We believe in increased gun restrictions and the immediate ban on the sale of automatic weapons. Our party supports working towards revoking the 2nd amendment so that we may live in a weapons free society, and so all Americans may enjoy their right to peace and well-being.
Crime:
Our party believes that it is necessary to lower the absurdly high incarceration rates in America to improve our nation's domestic tranquility. First, we must immediately publicize all private prisons. The closure of Guantanamo Bay and other unconstitutional detention facilities is a top priority. Banning the death penalty once and for all will guarantee that no innocent citizen will be wrongly executed. By federally legalizing marijuana and taxing its sale and cultivation, we will save money spent on the War on Drugs as well as generate federal income. We propose the release of those convicted of marijuana possession. This will also reduce cost. This income can be used to fund rehabilitation programs, job training, and community service programs for soon to be released inmates. We also believe that bail is incredibly biased towards those wealthy enough to afford it and disproportionately overlooks lower income offenders and therefore we propose to modify the price of bail to include the income level and crime of the offender.
Immigration:
We believe that illegal immigration rates must be lowered through legal immigration reform. To increase accessibility, the citizenship application fee will be lowered from $700 to $300. One’s citizenship should not be determined by the cost. The citizenship test should be altered to focus less on the written Constitution, and more on the laws and values held by the American People. Along with the application, each potential citizen must turn in a plan for their residency and potential employment or education. Over the course of five years, after receiving their citizenship, new citizens will be checked on to ensure their safe integration into our culture and community. The “Melting Pot” of American culture must be preserved and cherished for generations to come.
Civil Rights:
Our party supports women’s rights to choose what they do with their bodies. We believe in equality for all genders and the LGBTQ community in the workplace and in all stages of life. We will continue to push for an equal rights amendment to the Constitution. Our party supports stem cell research and wishes to extend voting rights listed in the Voting Rights Act of 1964 to the Constitution, as well as to extend constitutional rights to all immigrants.
We support labor unions and workers rights because we know that American workers are the backbone of our country’s security and success.
Our party also will be federally supporting poverty relief programs to aid those who cannot support themselves so that we can help them back onto their feet.
